Nintendo Wii For Weight Loss?
In a six-week experiment to evaluate the possible physical benefits of the new Nintendo Wii was conducted by Philadelphia resident Mickey DeLorenzo.
For those unfamiliar with the Nintendo Wii, it is a new, next-generation video game console offering from, once industry leader, Nintendo. The innovative concept behind this console compared to others is the controller. The Wii Remote is a wireless hand-held remote which also contains a motion-detecting sensors which allow the user to interact with the game by waving, slashing, swinging and twirling the remote.
DeLorenzo’s six-week experiment used the “Wii Sports” title which is bundled with the system and contains such games as Tennis, Bowling, Baseball, Golf, and Boxing. The idea, maintain all normal activity and eating habits, but add 30 minutes per day of time spent playing Wii Sports.
The results might surprise you. In the six-week period DeLorenzo saw a total weight loss of 9 pounds and a decrease of 1.2% in his Body Mass Index. DeLorenzo notes that he plays the game as vigorously as possible, to gain the results, but it does open the door for further investigation. Could the Nintendo Wii be blazing a new trail in fitness? Or is this simply an isolated case?ÂÂ
