Tofu Linked to Diminished Memory
A new Indonesion study has found that consuming tofu at least once a day can result in diminished memory, especially among those over the age of 68. The study focused on 719 elderly Indonesions living in urban and rural regions of Java.
Soy products are known to be rich in micronutrients called phytoestrogens which may protect the brains of younger and middle-aged people from damage. However, the study suggests phytoestrogens in high quantity may highten the risk of dementia in older people.
At the same time, damage to the brain might also be caused by formaldehyde whcih is sometimes used in Indonesia as a preservative for tofu, although, previous research has shown high tofu consumption resulted in an increased risk of dementia in older Japanese American men.
Consumption of soy among the study participants was high so soy-users should realize that more research needs to be done in order to draw definitive conclusions.
