B-Complex Vitamins For A Healthy Brain
If you are looking for a healthier brain and nervous system, B-complex vitamins have long been known as a means to maintain mental sharpness. Now, a recent study indicates that vitamin B-12 may even protect older people against the loss of brain volume and reduce the risk of developing dementia.
Conducted by researchers at Oxford University, the study found that people who had higher blood levels of vitamin B-12 were six times less likely to experience brain shrinkage than people with lower levels of the vitamin.
Foods that contain vitamin B-12 are of animal origin and include meat, eggs, fish and dairy. However, for vegans who do not eat such foods and elderly who may not eat enough of these foods may benefit from a vitamin supplement containing B-12.
