Oats

Like other cereal grains, oats are valued as a source of carbohydrates that provide calories for energy. Scientific studies have shown that oats alter metabolism and enhance performance when eaten 45 minutes to one hour before exercise of moderate intensity. Oats have a higher concentration of well-balanced protein than other grains and contain phytochemicals that are associated with protection from chronic disease such as cancer. In addition, oats contain a balance of essential fatty acids and have one of the best amino acid profiles of any gain. Furthermore, oats are a good source folic acid, biotin, pantothenic acid, and vitamin E as well as zinc, selenium, copper, iron, manganese and magnesium. The beta glucan in oats may also help speed up the response to infection, leading to faster healing. In addition, oats have been used to help in the withdrawal from nicotine, cocaine or opiates and is one of the best nervous system tonics available.
