Calcium

Calcium – Calcium, the most abundant mineral in the body, is essential for the growth and maintenance of bones and teeth and helps prevent rickets in children and osteoporosis in adults. Calcium is also important for the transportation of nerve impulses, and clotting of the blood, helps to keep blood pressure normal and may reduce the risk of heart disease. When taken with Vitamin D, Calcium may help reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. Too much Calcium can cause constipation and calcium deposits in soft tissue causing damage to the heart, liver or kidneys. Calcium supplements are available in a various forms; the form that is best absorbed by the body is calcium citrate-malate.
Food Sources: dairy products, almonds, dark green leafy vegetables, sardines and in salmon (in the edible bones of the canned fish).
Adult RDA: 800 mg. Pregnant Women and Young Adults – 1,200 mg.
